FAQs

FLARE Mission Statement

FLARE: The Flagler Review is a literary journal published by undergraduate students in collaboration with the Flagler College English Department. We accept submissions from burgeoning and experienced writers who provide passionate work with unique insights. Our submitters come from all over the globe and hold a common spark in their hearts for the craft.

Stationed in the nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, FLARE has pursued its mission of expressing artistry and sparking inspiration for decades. Each spring, we showcase a new cast of artists and writers who display ingenuity and originality. Like a flare sent into the darkness, FLARE: The Flagler Review seeks to act as a beacon of creativity and community for Flagler College and beyond.

FLARE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

At FLARE: The Flagler Review, our outlook on diversity, equity, and inclusion is clear-cut: it’s about welcoming everyone.

We believe that when people feel respected and included, they can be more creative, inspired, and productive. In reading the perspective of another person, persona, or character, we experience empathy, develop our understanding of the world, and obtain new planes of awareness.

We aim to cultivate a culture where all staff, contributors, and readers can bring their finest selves together in the interests of all, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, sexuality, religion, class, age, and ability.

FLARE Land Acknowledgement Statement

FLARE: The Flagler Review respectfully acknowledges that Flagler College, our base of operations, resides on the unceded territory of the Timucua tribes of Florida. Many members of this Indigenous group were forced to leave their land or lost their lives due to settler, colonial, and state-sponsored violence.

As a journal, we recognize the historical and enduring impact of colonization on Indigenous communities. Committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion, FLARE will continue to work to be more accountable to Indigenous peoples in Florida and beyond. Our intent is to support and promote Indigenous students, faculty, and staff in higher education, and advance Indigenous creativity and inclusion via publication.

The Flagler Review was established in 1989.

Before the spring of 2012, The Flagler Review was produced through the volunteer efforts of Flagler students and faculty advisors. In spring 2012, the student staff voted for an ambitious redevelopment of the journal, including adopting a new acronym-based name that would further refine the brand. Thus, that spring issue was the first to bear the name FLARE: The Flagler Review.

In 2012, for both spring and fall semesters, The Flagler Review was offered as a course listing for the first time: ENG 240, Selected Topics. It is now a spring course listed as CRW 215 FLARE: The Flagler Review. Successful completion grants students three credits.

The course description is as follows:

This course is a production-oriented workshop that will produce a full-length issue of FLARE: The Flagler Review, the literary magazine of Flagler College. Students will solicit and evaluate work for publication and participate in all aspects of journal production, from editing and design to marketing and promotions. The course provides students with publishing insight and experience to help them grow as writers and editors. This course may be taken multiple times for credit, but not for credit towards the Creative Writing minor.

General Guidelines

FLARE accepts submissions of fiction, flash fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art for consideration. Please limit longer works—flash fiction, fiction, or nonfiction—to one submission per submitter. For poetry and art, please limit your submission to five pieces.

Importantly, we do not accept previously published pieces. FLARE also does not accept AI-generated materials. If you submit works produced (either all or in part) with artificial intelligence and you fail to indicate such, we reserve the right to withdraw our offer of publication or remove your published works from our journal, website, promotional channels, and any other outlets.

FLARE editors select work through a blind reading process. Please remove names and identifying features from actual manuscripts and file extensions. Send a completed 75 to 100-word contributor's bio, separate from your manuscript, within your cover letter. Manuscripts should be in 12-point font, double-spaced (single-spaced for poetry), and Times New Roman, Arial, or Georgia unless the manuscript specifically needs a different font or format. (If this is the case, it should be stated.) Include page numbers in the bottom right-hand corner.

Submissions that do not follow our guidelines will be discarded.

Student editors in the Flagler College English Department in St. Augustine, Florida, publish FLARE. Submissions are open to anyone who wishes to submit, and Flagler College students and alumni are also encouraged to submit but will not be given preference over other submissions. Please note simultaneous submissions in your cover letter and notify us if your work is accepted elsewhere (either all or in part) by using the message function in Submittable

We receive a high volume of submissions and try to respond within 6 months. Payment for domestic contributors is in the form of one hard copy of the issue in which the author is published; international contributors will receive a free PDF copy of the issue in which their work appears.

Annual Deadline for Spring Edition: Jan. 15

We don't accept emailed submissions. Instead, please follow this link to find our formatting guidelines and send using a Submittable link.

Submit Your Work

Note: We do not accept paper submissions except from those writers who do not have ready access to the Internet (such as those who are incarcerated, unhoused, etc.). Submitters must note why they are sending a hard copy submission. Paper submissions for the current period must be postmarked by the current submission period's deadline and must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

If you qualify, you may send hard copies to:

Submission Types

Poetry

FLARE seeks to publish the most developed poetry we can find. We place high value on unique and fresh poetic language. We also appreciate and encourage experimentation with form, style, and rhyme. We are most attracted to pieces that throw us around the room and make us reevaluate our perspectives. Submit no more than five poems per submission.

Fiction

FLARE looks for fiction that showcases evocative storytelling and fresh perspectives with developed voices. We admire original, organic, and thought-provoking pieces no matter the genre. Fiction submissions should be 3,000 words or less.

Flash Fiction

FLARE looks for flash fiction pieces that pack a punch. Surprise us, make us consider things we had never thought of before. Flash fiction submissions should be between 250 - 1,000 words.

Creative Nonfiction

We are open to any style or genre of nonfiction, but we are most drawn to work that tells a story, features narrative cohesion, and offers insight into a culture, situation, event, phenomenon, or observation. Creative nonfiction submissions should be 3,000 words or less.

Art

FLARE primarily looks for cover art along with some section pieces. We look for strong, unique statement art—from photography to design and illustration—to complement our written submissions. Please include no more than five pieces. CMYK format is required
